can you share with me where they should go, who they should meet, any connections for a couple of simple travelers...non touristic is best, of course...
and if anyone is interested/willing to talk to them by email, please let me know! they are not on tribe, but they do use email, so i could connect you.

Re: connections in jamaica
Tue, November 20, 2007 - 12:25 PMhmmm...r-r-r-r-i-i-i-g-g-h-h-t-t..
that's not incredibly helpful, and no, i'm not joking...but since you're thinking i am, is that an indication that there's not tribe in jamaica? meaning, is this tribe just virtual? or are there people living in jamaica who are connected with one another, who spend time in certain places, and are open to meeting travelers coming through? because see, there is tribe in other places, there are people connected like that..so if there's not in jamaica, i'll want to share that with my friend so she can make other arrangements...
anyone?
thank you.... -

Re: connections in jamaica
Fri, November 23, 2007 - 4:18 PMYeah that reply is kinda strange! I'm not sure what homeboy is getting out of your post that I'm not..... Your friends are gonna have a good time... If they want to get off the beaten path... One of the places they should go check out is Where Bob Marley was livin when he was young. In Trench Town.. Everybody goes to Oche Rios and Nine Mile.. But few folks make it to the yard where He wrote " 3 little birds on my doorstep" Tell them to find Stoneman. He's the guy that takes care of the place... He'll show you around... Make sure they have a taxi driver who knows the area take them there... That place is not called Trenchtown for nothing... It's serious ghetto..... But if the driver takes them directly to Bob Marley's yard and Stoneman..... It's sooo worth it..... -

Mon, November 26, 2007 - 8:47 PMStoneman is not in Trenchtown anymore- the Culture Yard is still there and being maintained and improved.
Now is not a great time to be in that area however.

Re: connections in jamaica
Tue, November 27, 2007 - 7:39 PMYou're welcome- I live in Kingston and have lived in Miami, Minneapolis and San Francisco as well, my family is American and Jamaican- to answer the original poster- Jamaica is a great and beautiful place, but it is not a "yeah mon" paradise in reality- people will tell you this if you look like you want to hear this, but in truth right now crime and murder are at an all time high, the economy is in shambles, and there is a sense of desperation- the new government has inherited a real mess and it is unclear if they will be able to sort it out. People are mostly friendly and honest, but 95% of people are HUNGRY- not for food but for something, so you have to be very careful how you judge your relationships and what people's expectations are.
In addition, your friends may have a very hard time at immigration if they try and land for 3 months w/o being able to show a means of support during that time- it is not a place that is easy to bum around in anymore, like it used to be in the Negril hippy days or even in the 80s. -

Re: connections in jamaica
Wed, November 28, 2007 - 11:14 AMYes I have encountered plenty of this for sure over the several years I have been going. It is a dance you have to go through to be clear about your connections with folks. And choose your steps wisely. I'm thankful to have good friends their that look out for me. They have had to step in and moderate some sticky situations for me more than a few times..
A great movie for your friends to watch before they embark on their journey would be " Life and Debt. " This can help paint the picture of real Jamaica.
