Instead of an official obituary, I'm posting the following; a personal message written by the gentlemen of Deadly Dragon Sound System in NYC.
===

R.I.P. BERTRAM BROWN 1950 - 2008

On Monday, September 8th our friend and trusted partner Bertram Brown passed away.
Mr. Brown was the Producer and Creator of the Freedom Sounds record label and his musical legacy will always be remembered.

Bertram was a true champion of the people of Greenwich Town where he grew up and lived for his entire life. He was an apex of generousity – always willing to help those around him. We here at Deadly Dragon owe him everything for both his diligent work and the absolutely open-hearted way with which he allowed us into his life, his home and into the spirit of the music which nourishes us.

Words alone fail when trying to explain what this man meant to us.
We will miss him terribly. The world has truly lost an essential piece of light.
We send our condolences to his family and friends.

Bertram Brown – Zion awaits.

On Monday, September 15th, our Eastvillageradio.com program from 6-8 will be devoted to music and life of Mr. Brown. Please tune in.

Cafesociety.org is a UK based arts organisation which works closely
with many schools to develop creative arts projects with young people.

We work regularly with young people in the Yorkshire region of the UK
and communities as far away as the Seychelles, Ethiopia and the
Navajo Reservation in Northern Arizona.

Our projects focus on digital storytelling, film making and digital photography.

We aim to teach young people how to make short films and document their lives
by creating short stories about subjects and interests that they choose.

We have just returned from Ethiopia and would like to invite you to view
a selection of the short films made by the young students of the Jamaican
Rastafari Development Community School in Shashemene – Ethiopia.

Our intention is to link schools in Ethiopia with schools here in the UK
by way of collaborative projects and exchanges.

We plan a return to Shashemene in July to continue our work with

the young students and to set up links with schools in the UK.

We aim to raise enough funds to enable the purchase of 2 laptop computers
and 2 digital video cameras which we will train the students and staff to use

and leave at the school to enable a sustainable element to the project.

We want the school to have the skills and technology to make short films

after we leave and communicate their stories to their new partner schools.

Please let us know your opinions and comments regarding the short films.

I’m sure the kids would love to know what you think…

Like most Jamaican media productions, the quality is so-so compared to American videos... it looks like it was shot on a Betacam. But it's interesting nonetheless; besides seeing a white dude w/ a genuine Jamaican accent (fucking weird), the skits run the gamut: from slightly accent-inflected skits that are legible, if not always understandable, to stuff that's delivered in full bore patois that's totally unintelligible to American English speakers.

If nothing else, a very interesting look inside pop culture on the island.
